Lunch Snacks

The battle of the school lunchbox

March 7, 2015

There are so many options other than sandwiches and filled rolls! I’d like to share a few with you.

Have some of your fillings prepared the night before, like grating up a  carrot and popping it into a glass bowl and just covering it with water. Next morning drain the liquid off and place on a paper towel to absorb the excess liquid. Have some boiled eggs mashed and ready to go, rip up or shred some lettuce slice up a few tomatoes  and whatever else they like and roll up in a Pure Coconut Wrap.

These are great no additives and so good for them with the added bonus of tasting delicious!

As a sweet wrap spread with some nut butter with Cacoa powder added and a banana (squeeze lemon juice over the banana) then wrap it up. You can get really creative with these they are delicious! These are easy for them to eat and get some fuel on board to hit the playground.

Wholemeal gluten free Pita pockets are so easy and they won’t lose the filling out the bottom. Again you can easily pre-prepare the night before the filling – shredded leftover chicken,  a small can of Tuna can be mixed with a little home-made mayo and a few spring onions (if to your child liking).

With Avocado, best to do that in the morning add a little lemon juice a touch of  Pink Himalayan salt and layer up the Pita with Tuna a mix of lettuce greens and Avocado. If you have edible flowers growing worthwhile add a few of those. Not only are they nutritious they taste great! You might get a bit of flack if you put it in your boys lunches though.

Mix up the fillings it’s important to your kids the pleasure and experience of different tastes. They are just like us they don’t like eating the same thing every day, especially when it’s been in a box in your school bag half the day!

Having worked in schools I’ve seen firsthand what goes on once that lunchtime bell goes and they have 10 minutes to eat their lunch and that’s getting their bags and lunch boxes out let alone eat it. Remember there are also the discussions that go on – what have you got etc!

Oh and then they drop it!! YEH it’s tough as a kid getting through your lunch some days. So when those lunch boxes come home half eaten it’s often not that they didn’t like what you gave them – they just ran out of time to eat it.

Try some easy to eat foods that will give them energy to running around at lunchtime Coconut wrapsand an afternoon of concentration in the classroom.

  1. A boiled egg so quick and easy
  2. Leftover chicken drum sticks or chicken wings recipe here
  3. Some of Creating Well Kids Meteor Balls is a good option too
  4. Carrot sticks a trail mix of seeds and a few dried fruits are great energy foods.
  5. A container of one of Creating Well Kids Chia Delights is a great option for a school lunch to!
  6. Along with PLENTY of clean filtered water and fresh seasonal fruit.

Enjoy a healthy happy day and have FUN
