As a kid we always had a huge vegetable garden and fruit trees in our backyard, our neighbours did too so we all shared. We had such a wonderful sense of community and family with our neighbours, they weren’t all hidden behind big fences and locked gates!
I continued this with my kids as I remembered fondly the experiences and adventures I created with my friends during those early years.
With my kids we had what I called our “Pick & Eat” garden. All the fruit and vegetables were allowed and encouraged to be eaten whenever they felt like it, if it was ripe and ready to be picked they could eat it!
When they were out in the garden playing by themselves or with friends they knew they could at anytime pick and eat whatever they liked. Regardless of how close to mealtime, I figured if they had eaten too much from the garden they were well feed and nourished! They were and still are great fruit and vegetable eaters. Not that this happened very often and they needed all the nutrients they could get in the fast growing years.
They always had a good balance of fruit and vegetables along with good fats, proteins and carbohydrates. They ate well and always had plenty of energy, very often it seemed like too much!
It is so easy and rewarding to grow your own no matter how much room have. There are so many options these days from small pots on your window sill to your whole back yard if you have one.
Over the coming weeks I will be sharing many different and interesting options for you and precious ones to grow own food easily.
Enjoy a healthy happy day J
